Afterschool Program
Hands-On, Minds-On
Students in grades 1-8 attend afterschool enrichment each Monday through Friday. Through engaging activities, they are able to practice reading and math skills as well as receive homework help. Small group games and activities make learning fun while enrichment clubs, led by community leaders, give the students hands-on, real world learning experiences. Lit & Enrichment Camp offers children the opportunity to enhance their literacy skills and have a lot of fun at the same time. All children, ages currently in Kindergarten through 8th grade are invited.
Reading and Writing
The National Reading Panel identified five key concepts at the core of every effective reading instruction program: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. At MOM, we strive to identify students’ needs by assessing students in these areas. In addition, we engage students in writer’s workshop to accelerate literacy. Finally, we are aware of the demands of end of year assessments such as ILEARN and IREAD and work to prepare our students for success.
Growing Entrepreneurs
We reap what we sow. The MOM garden becomes a living classroom where we cultivate collaboration, entrepreneurship and gardening skills, and we teach subjects such as art, math, nutrition and science. Community partners are currently working to build a children’s garden at our new garden location along Highland Ave.
